About This Project

Library Fit-Out

Crookhorn College wanted to encourage pupils back into the Learning Research Center by offering an organised and stimulating fun environment that reflects technology approach and images of the school. The library fit-out project is multi-functional and dynamic. The LRC also integrates an ICT suite and a separate classroom area for up to 30 pupils.

The Ken Rand design team met with the client for an in-depth exploration of their vision for the library fit-out including the space planning and design, followed by creating lay-out plans, 3D visuals and mood boards, until both us and the client were satisfied with the design for the new LRC. The selection of furniture and fittings were sensitive to the school’s image and robust to withstand high levels of use. Bold and vibrant accent colours were balanced with neutral beech wood and grey-silver metallic finishes throughout the scheme. Steel cantilever shelving system was selected with easy shelf adjustment and varied accessories for flexibility.

The new reception desk was relocated to the entrance and closely linked to an admin store and students cloak area.

The bespoke ICT workstations were designed angled towards the reception desk providing easy visual access to pupils PC monitors. The PC’s are contained and secured below the workstations with tidy cable management.

The soft seating area incorporates bespoke reading cubbies offering a unique reading experience so pupils can sink into their books.

Finally, the classroom area has been designed to be configured for various functions; classroom, parents evernings, lectures. Etc.

This project was made in partnership with Leaves builders. Since the library fit-out, the school has has had a very positive impact in the school and the student response to the new college library has been tremendous. The school feels very proud to have such contemporary learning space.

The student response to the new LCR has been tremendous. The students take particular delight using the comfy bespoke seating areas. Break times were always busy but there has been an increase in the number of students using the library. Many comments on the resemblance to a proper library. They feel it has a public library feel to the space and as such they are treating it with care and respect. The colour scheme is both bright and contemporary as is the benching for the computers and the study tables and chairs.
