Reception Desk Design – St Mary’s Hospital

St Mary’s Hospital came to Ken Rand Partners with a requirement for a new reception desk for their Disablement Services Unit. The building’s reception area was to be located inside an opening, behind a shutter which closes in front of the counter for security reasons. The counter location did not allow for direct view to the building’s main entrance. Therefore, there was no direct visibility of patients and visitors upon their arrival. For this project, it was vital for the receptionist to be as visible as possible, as she was the first point of contact for any visitors and patients. Also, the reception counter needed to be formed of low sections, allowing interaction with any wheelchair patients. Furthermore, the reception also needed to provide privacy by concealing the receptionist computer screen.

In order to fulfil our client’s requirements, we used a low straight reception counter from our collection of Straight Reception Desks and mounted a Perspex screen which sat proud off the desk by a small amount, ensuring that the shutter was able to close properly. The Ken Rand Design team gave the client the option to have a graphic on the screen, the client decided to have some text stating “Welcome to Disablement Services”. Our designers created an array of artwork proposals for the client to choose from, options ranged from vinyl’s with plain text, patterned backgrounds and photographs.

The finished screen was positioned to one side of the desk enabling the receptionist to view patients walking in and out of the practice and moreover, leaving a wide section of the desk free and accessible for patients to receive and sign any documents.  The screen was also aligned with the computer monitor, covering its view from visitors and also keeping cables and paperwork out of sight.

To position St Mary’s new desk design, Ken Rand Partners removed and disposed of their pre-existing desk too. We ensured that the fit out was undertaken from early hours in the morning, causing minimum disruption to the hospital unit. This embodies our favourite part of project management, working with our clients and ensuring everything runs as smooth as possible for them, which was successfully achieved in this project.
